The 2008 NSW Seniors Week Ambassadors lend their names, energy and time to challenge some of society's stereotypes around ageing and raise awareness of the valuable contributions seniors continue to make to our community. During March 2008 you would have seen them on television, heard them on radio, read about them in the newspapers and seen them at NSW Seniors Week official events.

 

Ron Barr AM is the founder of Youth Insearch Foundation (Aust) Inc. He has helped more than 27,000 young people from all over Australia to find a new positive direction in their lives. Ron won a NSW Seniors Week Achievement Award in 2007.

Lorraine Bayly AM was a founding member of the Ensemble Theatre Company; Over the past 49 years she has played numerous roles in theatres all over Australia and New Zealand including Death of a Salesman, The Last Yankee, Shoehorn Sonata, Dear Liar, Rough Justice, The Daughter-In Law, Traveling North, Birthrights, and The Male of the Species. Television credits include The Challenge, Grim Pickings, Through my Eyes, The Sullivan's, and Carson's Law. Film credits include Ride a Wild Pony, The Man from Snowy River, Fatty Finn, and Home Brew.

Mervyn Bishop is one of Australia's leading photojournalists. He was the first Indigenous person to gain a cadetship for a major daily newspaper and worked as a press photographer for the Sydney Morning Herald for 17 years. Merv's work is held in the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of NSW.

Ita Buttrose AO, OBE has had an impressive career in print, radio and television which has turned her into a household name. She is a businesswoman, journalist and author and became the youngest-ever Editor of The Australian Women's Weekly. Ita was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Daily and Sunday Telegraphs and is now writing her ninth book.

Margaret (Maggie) Chaseling has been a community volunteer on the Northern Beaches for more than 20 years. She was involved in organising the NSW Seniors week in 1958. Maggie is a committee member and zone delegate of National Seniors Northern Beaches and holds the role of School Council Secretary for the Royal Far West School at Manly.

Daryll Cook has been an active community volunteer for more than 50 years. He established five regional stroke recovery groups on the south coast of NSW and the Acute Stroke Unit at Shoalhaven Hospital in Nowra. Daryll has been decorated twice by Her Majesty the Queen with the Australian Sports Medal (1999) and the Centenary Medal (2003). He received a NSW Seniors Week Achievement Award in 2007.

Bruce Elder has been involved in writing more than 60 books including Blood on the Wattle and the travel guide Walkabout. He is the Australian Editor of Trivial Pursuit and has worked as a print and radio journalist in both London and Sydney. Bruce is an award-winning journalist with the Sydney Morning Herald as well as a weekly guest on ABC radio's Tony Delroy's Nightlife.

Judith Green, MBE, OAM was Appointed Captain Social Services with the occupation force in Japan during World War II and later returned to work as a social worker in hospitals in Sydney, she was particularly involved as the Liaison Officer for the Department of Health with the Home and Community Care Program and Board of the NSW Meals on Wheels Association. Having had a lifetime interest and involvement with Agricultural shows, Judith became President of the south Coast and Tablelands Show Societies and is still very involved with these organisations.

Nancye Hayes OAM is an actor, dancer, singer, choreographer and director. She began her career in JC Williamson's production of My Fair Lady in 1961 and went on to star in such musicals as Sweet Charity, Pippin, Irene, Annie, Chicago, Sweeny Todd and Nine. Her other stage credits include Broadway Bound, Showboat, Same Time Next Year, The Glass Menagerie, Steel Magnolias, Stepping Out, Follies in Concert, The Music Man, The Snow Queen, Eureka and Oklahoma and Summer Rain. Nancye is still performing.

Kamahl has a 35-year recording history, embracing number one international hits and more than 80 gold and platinum plaques. He has moved on to his own stratum in Australian Entertainment performing at the Sydney Opera House, London Palladium, Talk of the Town and New York's Carnegie Hall. Kamahl is still entertaining and still packing them in.

Petrea King established the Quest for Life Foundation in 1990. Since her recovery from leukemia in 1984, Petrea has devoted her life to counseling people, facilitating support groups, running residential programs and lecturing widely on health and healing.

Jimmy Little AO has been entertaining Australians for over 50 years. His dedication and passion for Aboriginal causes saw the evolvement of the Jimmy Little Foundation. He continues to be a positive role model to the Aboriginal community, particularly young Aboriginal performers. Jimmy holds three honorary doctorates and numerous awards and this living legend still performs today.

Brian McGuigan OAM is Managing Director of Brian McGuigan Wines and has been at the forefront of the Australian Wine Industry for 40 years. He is one of the wine industry's most versatile and well-known figures, utilising skills as a winemaker, viticulturist, marketer and communications specialist to take his wines all over Australia and around the world.

Charles (Chicka) Madden is a highly respected and well known member of the Aboriginal Community. He is an elder from Gadigal land and has lived in and around the Redfern area most of his life serving the Indigenous community as Director of the Aboriginal Medical Service, Secretary of the Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council and Director of the NSW Aboriginal Hostel.

Norman May OAM is the man responsible for the most memorable stretch of sports commentary in Australian Olympic history. He is famous for his "Gold! Gold! Gold!" chant, first heard when Australia won its first Olympic gold in eight years at the Moscow Olympics.

Phyllis O'Donell is a pioneer of women's surfing. In 1964, Phyllis became the first women’s surfing world champion. Phyllis has competed in surfing competitions around the world, winning three Australian titles and eight state finals. At 69, Phyllis is still surfing and swims five hours each day.

Graham Ross is the gardening presenter on Better Homes & Gardens and the host of GroundForce. He started the Garden Clinic 2GB Radio Show in 1980, was Principal of the Ryde School of Horticulture and a Trustee of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. Graham is an expert on the gardens of Japan and China providing insights into the cultural traditions and the spirituality of its gardens.

Dr Rosemary Stanton OAM is Australia's best-known nutritionist and is author of 32 books. She wants to change poor eating habits, so that people have healthier diets, eat more enjoyable foods, and cause minimal environmental damage. Rosemary was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 1998 for her services to community health through education in nutrition.

Henri Szeps OAM has enjoyed an enviable career on stage, in film and on television. He won a Helpmann Award for Cabaret, a Penguin Award for Palace of Dreams and a place in the hearts of many for his role in Mother and Son. Henri will appear in In Conversation with Henri Szeps at the Parramatta Riverside Theatres as part of NSW Seniors Week.

Stuart Wagstaff OAM has had continued success in theatre, television and film in England, Australia and the US. He has starred in productions and television programs such as My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, Studio A, Beauty and the Beast, Sydney Tonight, Dick Emery Show, In Melbourne Tonight, Blankety Blanks, GP, Rafferty's Rules, All Saints, The Rocky Horror Show, Crazy for You and Pan. Cameron Mackintosh's production of Oliver! marks Stuart's return to the stage.

Patricia (Pat) Woodley is an internationally accredited communications trainer. Her varied background began as a high school teacher and she was a successful model and winner of the Miss NSW (Aus) title. Pat opened her renowned Presentation Academy and Model Agency, worked as a newspaper columnist and media consultant and continued to conduct Interpersonal skills training. Pat is currently training students in speaking English and people skills.
