Over 60’s break skydiving record
Release date: 1 April 2008
A plucky bunch of over 60’s launched the 50th NSW Seniors Week (6-13 April) today by achieving a skydiving record.
The team linked up in a mid-air formation after freefalling 14,000 feet above a North Wollongong beach, trumping the previous Australian record of six seniors.
Marty Pandelus, 62, from South Wollongong fronted the team. He believes older age should not get in the way of experiencing new things.
“We set out to achieve a new skydiving record to show the world activities can be enjoyed at any age, regardless of how extreme they appear,” he said.
Minister for Ageing, Kristina Keneally said the skydive had captured the true spirit of NSW Seniors Week.
“I congratulate the skydiving team for their historical accomplishment,” she said. “This is exactly what NSW Seniors Week is all about; getting out there, living life and having fun.
“The week is one of the southern hemisphere’s biggest celebrations for older people with more than 700 events taking place under the slogan LIVE LIFE.
“Highlights include the ‘Young at Heart film festival’ and the ‘NSW Seniors Week Achievement Awards.
“There will also be lots of opportunities to get active with activities ranging from walks and talks to bike rides and garden tours,” she said.
Free official event programs are available at local clubs.
