Stars shine for 50th NSW Seniors Week

A group of much-loved Australian musicians, performers and high-profile community leaders has been revealed as faces of the 50th annual NSW Seniors Week.

Household names including Ita Buttrose, Kamahl and Lorraine Bayly are part of the 21 ambassador* line-up, set to share their stories and attend events during the week, running 6-13 April.

Several ambassadors will also feature in the In Conversation series, where seniors will hear intimate talks from the stars before having the unique opportunity to ask them those burning questions.

Ita Buttrose has carved out an illustrious media career in print, radio and television.  She was the youngest-ever editor of The Australian Women’s Weekly and is currently writing her ninth book.

“Seniors Week is a chance to celebrate the wisdom and knowledge of older Australians most of whom are proudly young at heart,” says Ita.

“Nothing annoys me more than to see 60-something people described as ‘elderly’, especially as no one in their 60s even thinks of themselves as old! They are pioneers in changing community attitudes to ageing and refuse to accept age in the way their parents did.”

The Minister for Ageing, Kristina Keneally, said the ambassadors would play an important role in promoting events and the valuable contribution seniors make to NSW communities each day.

“NSW Seniors Week is a great program.  One of the biggest seniors’ events in the southern hemisphere,” Ms Keneally said. “Up to 250,000 people will attend events, including the Premier’s Gala Concerts as well as local community activities.

“Seniors Week aims to thank, celebrate and recognise older people across the state for the contributions they make to the community,” she said.
